Infusions

For many of us with MS, infusions are part of the process. At the time of this writing, I’ve had nine infusions since my diagnosis in April 2023. I can’t say that I’m “used to” them, but now I know what to expect. And to help make infusion day a bit more tolerable, I’ve created some rituals. They are small things that help me get through the day, and I want to share them with you.

Here’s my advice for infusion day:

  • Have a uniform
    • I put together a “uniform,” so I know I’m comfortable while I’m getting the infusion (and so I don’t have to think about an outfit) – but I also wear clothes that make me happy. In addition to comfy sweatpants, I always wear a band t-shirt, because it reminds me of my favorite songs. I’ll also wear a pair of cheerful socks (why not?). Finally, I recently got this awesome IV sweatshirt from BeWell – it’s a genius piece of clothing for infusion day.
  • Think of it as “me” time
    • Sitting for the infusion can be lonely. I just try to think of it as time to myself where I don’t have to do anything. I read, listen to music or a podcast, or sleep. One time, I brought my laptop and did some work. Honestly, I will never do that again. Work can wait.
  • Just be
    • It’s ok to be sitting there and think about how much it sucks. Or to be distracted by a funny show so you don’t have to think about it. It’s also ok to not think about anything at all. (Please note – I remind myself of this every time I go for my infusion and let’s be honest, I remind myself of this every day). I think it’s better to go in without any expectations that you have to be anything on infusion day.
  • Treat yourself
    • When I was first diagnosed, a friend with MS told me that every time he gets an infusion, he deserves a treat (for him, it’s cookies). I love this advice and have adopted it myself. Having to do this isn’t fun, so looking forward to a treat helps.

Whether you are just starting or you’ve gotten many infusions in the past, I hope these tips help you at your next infusion.
